Evangelos Raftopoulos, as Vice Chair of the Compliance Committee of the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols, participated in the 19th Meeting of the Compliance Committee held on 4 and 5 July 2023 in Athens, Greece. He also participated in the First Regional Training for the Promotion of the Aarhus Convention Across the Mediterranean organized by WES and the UNECE Aarhus Convention Secretariat (Αthens, 14-15 November 2023), where, representing the MEPIELAN Centre, was the keynote speaker of the Session “Supporting Capacity Building and Implementation on the ground” (15 November 2023), presenting the topic “Aarhus Centre in Greece – A Case in Progress: The MEPIELAN Initiative”. On 22 December 2023, representing MEPIELAN Centre, he signed a Small Scale Funding Agreement (SSFA) with the UNEP/MAP, represented by the Coordinator Ms. Tatjana Hema, for the launch of a Training School as a first step in the educational programme on sustainable environmental governance in the Mediterranean Region.
Sophia Galanis, a new Academic Fellow of MEPIELAΝ Centre, participated in the annual meeting of the Legal Experts Group of the UNODC Global Maritime Programme at the University of Oxford (January 2023) where she presented a paper on maritime pollution that will be published in the UNODC manual “Maritime Crime: a Manual for Criminal Justice Practitioners”. Sophia taught Marine Governance on the MSc Programme on Sustainability and Quality in Marine Industry of the University of Piraeus and Maritime Security on the naval training course of the NATO Maritime Security Centre of Excellence in Istanbul (September 2023). Her article, co-authored with Dr Lisa Mardikian, entitled ‘Protecting the Arctic Indigenous Peoples’ Livelihoods in the Face of Climate Change: The Potential of Regional Human Rights Law and the Law of the Sea’ was published by Human Rights Law Review (https://doi.org/10.1093/hrlr/ngad020). Her research on ‘Maritime Security in the Polar Regions’ was also published in the Routledge Handbook of Polar Law (edited by Y Tanaka, R Johnstone & V Ulfbeck).
Konstantinos Tsimonis was invited as a guest speaker at the University of Lancaster and Columbia University where he presented his research on COSCO’s investment in the Port of Piraeus. Konstantinos was promoted to Senior Lecturer in August 2023 at King’s College London.
Georgios Raftopoulos presented and coordinated a seminar under the title “New Hydrogen Technologies: European Strategy and Greek Action Plan” to support the uptake of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, hosted by Themistocles and Dimitris Tsatsos Foundation – Centre for European Constitutional Law, on January 16th 2024. The seminar focused on the existing and upcoming national and EU regulatory framework that will set green hydrogen as a central pillar of the energy transition.

Before its establishment as a University Centre, MEPIELAN operated as a successful international research, training and informational programme (2002-2007) under the scientific direction of Professor Evangelos Raftopoulos and the aegis of the Panteion University of Athens, supported by the Mediterranean Action Plan/UNEP and the Greek Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works.
MEPIELAN Centre is an accredited UNEP/MAP PARTNER (since 2013), a Member of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) (since 2016), and a Member of the Steering Committee of the MCSD (since 2019).
