On 23 December 2013, the Republic of Moldova became the thirty-third Party to ratify the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (Kyiv Protocol) to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

The Ministerial-level Meeting of HELCOM took place on 3 October 2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Heads of State and Government of the Baltic States, the EU Environmental Commissioner, business communities and non-governmental organizations attended this Meeting in order to assess the progress towards reaching the common goal of the Baltic Sea in a good environmental status by 2021.

The sixth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group (hereinafter, the Working Group) to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) convened from 19-23 August 2013 at UN Headquarters in New York.
On 15 May 2013 the Eighth Biennial Ministerial Meeting of the Arctic Council was held in Kiruna, Northern Sweden. The Meeting marked the end of the Swedish Chairmanship and the beginning of the Canadian Chairmanship. Approximately 300 participants, including ministers, delegates from the eight Arctic states, indigenous people and observers attended the Meeting.
